Right now Contractor supports passing only file names and only via command-line parameters. This doesn't allow passing e.g. strings such as URLs, text buffers such as text selection or any kind of data that's not saved to disk.
This spec describes other possible data transfer mechanisms for Contractor along with their pros and cons.
