Allow matrix and vector index access

Anyway, it looks like we agree on putting back the index access
provided that we

(1) make it behave correctly in parallel
(2) add a warning (using the Event class)

And we can have a global parameter (defaulting to True) named
"warning_on_index_access" that controls whether the warning should be
printed.
