Whiteboard

Please, try to avoid realtime results as much as possible. It's one of the reasons people keeps using Synpaptic instead of Software-Center, and hangs the app most of the time. -- carlosleci

there are some mockups for the AppCenter, a substitute of the USC, but I think we will start to work on it after Luna because now there is no time to complete it. - mefrio

There have been some discussions regarding how to go about doing an AppCenter, and we'll definitely see some work in this direction for L+1. - cassidyjames

So Light Software Center is being worked on by Lubuntu folk and mefrio. They seem to be following my suggestion and writing a shared library upon which UIs can be easily built.

An interesting article I stumbled upon which may be of interest to you developers:

Ubuntu Tweak has a new 'app install' feature that is rather interesting in that it adds the ppa by itself and the user can select daily or stable builds and whatnot. Could be a relevant way to avoid the "all software is old because the distro has every package frozen". Then again, it could introduce some vulnerabilities depending on the packages installed. Worth a look, still. http://www.webupd8.org/2012/10/ubuntu-tweak-080-gets-new-apps-feature.html
