instead of sorting fonts alphabetically by name, cluster them by appearance (working example available)
one of the worst parts of using Inkscape is having to choose 1 font from the
hundreds of fonts in the font dialog. for example, if i'm looking for a sans
font, i have to scan the entire alphabet, write down good candidates, then try
them all. this takes a lot of time and effort if i'm picky about typeface,
especially for more stylized fonts.
what i would like to have instead is a drop-down or tree-style font chooser
that can group all the sans fonts, all the serif fonts, etc.
i have written a program that can do exactly this, creating clusters of
similar-looking fonts automatically. the results speak for themselves:

What about a typeface family? It is a difficult sell to try and suggest that designers randomly browse a long list of typefaces in an design application looking for a typeface selection. Generally speaking, a great deal of thought is invested into selecting a typeface family or pairing. There are many sorting criteria, but a tool such as FontMatrix seems more well suited for what you are describing. Perhaps some research into the habits of designers would be insightful?
