Join nodes from different objects
There's a tool that can only be found in Adobe Illustrator that permits the user to join points from different objects. The name of the tool is "Join" and is not found in Inkscape, nor Sodipodi, nor OO Draw.
This tool shall be created in the "Path" menu, and the principle shall be the following:
1 - Using the "Node Edit" tool, it shall be possible to select two different objects;
2 - Select two nodes, one from one object, one from another;
3 - Go to menu "Path" (or right-click) and execute "Join";
4 - In case the nodes are in the same location, they'll become one, otherwise, a trace shall be created between them;
5- The two objects become one.
This is a powerfull tool because it does what the user wants, different from "Union" or "Combine".

Can't this just be done by creating a union, then using the existing node tools to join the nodes? Seems like more work than necessary to remove a single often-used step.

The new node tool, introduced in Inkscape 0.48, can handle several path. There's no new join menu, but you can join nodes from two path by selecting the paths, the nodes you want to join, and use the 'Join selected nodes' button in the node tool bar. The two nodes are joined and the two path combined.
Does it fit your needs?
