One potential problem in Socrates: what if this is an educational work, or an updated version, and a new version of the book is out? What about implementing something that lets the author upload the latest version, and notify anyone with that book downloaded that a new version is out?

This is a good idea, I'd have to look into implementing it though, this would be a pretty easy XML hack though not requiring HUGE code adjustment, you could also over-place the current link but that might conflict problems, maybe attach an updated version in the xml and have xml's be checked each load.
