Hardy Package Option - Development
If you plan to install programs not within the Ubuntu repositories or not available in Debian (.deb) format, usually you will encounter errors involving dependencies. It becomes time consuming to go through the package manager and install all the development files needed. This is where the development package options come into play. When installing Ubuntu (on the live CD or Alternate Install CD), you may choose the to install any development packages needed by clicking the dev. package type. (E.G., an option to install all KDE development packages would be in a single checkbox, Python development would be in separate checkbox, Gnome in another, and so on and so forth.) Fedora 8 and openSUSE 10.2+ have already include these options on their install CD's/DVD's. Obviously, if this option was included on a live CD, there would need to be a valid network connection (since the packages will not fit on a CD). Also, the package manager (Synaptic or Adept) will have the same options available in the same format if you wish to install these packages after the Ubuntu install process has completed. This tool is extremely useful, since it is especially hard to install programs not native to Ubuntu/Debian, and not available in the package manager.
