using the best possible fonts is important, how about asking the users?
my notion (that isn't backed up by any numbers), is that the most common activity being
done when using a computer, is reading some kind of text.
therefore, the importance of having the best looking, easiest on the eyes, readable and clear
text is, in my opinion, extremely important (anecdote: cleartype was the only major feature
i've noticed in winXP compared to 2000.. and it made a difference).
patches for better rendering already exist, but i suggest reevaluating the fonts for each
language, have a poll among the users, and choose the fonts and rendering methods
that are the best for most of the people, with the fonts that they choose.
