A desktop wide library of assets (video, music, photos, etc) with metadata
Should we have a desktop wide content store of media, files, etc with a common interface. Something that tracks all your files and metadata about those files. Also providing a common interface to find those files and and interact with them from various applications.
Imagine managing your photo library in f-spot, and wanting to attach a photo to an email. Choose attachments, select type of file you want (photo) and bring up a browse interface to find the photo you want to send. Same could apply to video, music, documents, etc.

Whiteboard
Before we start discussing implementation, let's come up with some ideas of what the system should do.
A project to keep in mind to solve this problem:
https:/
An infrastructural research project to see if dbus based data services can effectively allow data access to well defined classes of data from a variety of sources. Examples include, getting photos from google picasa and organising them into galleries for local consumption, accessing ipod galleries and local photos directories.
This project could supply you with the required pipes to provide data sets to all clients from multiple backends. The ideas are the same I believe.
