Increase Direct Collaboration with Other Distros
Just a gamete of a thought, but, how about inviting those working on distros with similar goals (ease of use without crippling the system) and who are doing good work to join Ubuntu's team? That is, use it as the base, and have their work inspected and integrated. Not only this, but, of course they could still put-out their own distro under their own name...but why not seek-out and embrace those who're doing good work that ought to be refined and integrated, rather than duplicated? Make a serious rally-call for the Linux community--at least among the free distros.
Even include those based on RPMs as far as possible...and the difference in distros, then, should merely be in minor details, slight differences in preference and configuration, default packages, etc.. And do it for both Gnome and KDE.
