Idea: make phonon-gstreamer the default backend. This will give Amarok the same backend as Rhythmbox. phonon-gstreamer currently has issues with PulseAudio in Lucid, but it works fine in Arch Linux, so the software itself does not seem to be fundamentally broken.
[JontheEchidna] Phonon GStreamer is not likely to happen. The backend is and has been quite buggy, and is also unmaintained.
[rgreening] If anything, we should consider phonon-vlc and it's status for a back-end. phonon-xine is better than phonon-gstreamer at the moment, eventhough the xine one has issues as well. Also, both these back-ends have issues with audio CD-ROM on anything other than /dev/cdrom which can be a major issue for netbooks with removable cd drives. Perhaps vlc plugin will be better at this?
