Ubuntu One Client Application

Registered by John Lenton

One of the unique selling propositions of Ubuntu One is its tight integration with the Ubuntu desktop. The ultimate objective of Ubuntu One is to be an integral element of Ubuntu which adds a layer of cloud enabled functionality pervasively across the desktop. The Ubuntu and Ubuntu One user experiences should be woven together and fused to the extent that Ubuntu One functions become standard desktop conventions in the same league as copy & paste or drag & drop.

This is the ultimate goal we are aiming for. A earlier target on the road towards this destination is make the desktop and web 100% independent platforms. It should be possible to use Ubuntu One entirely within the desktop without opening a browser or visa-versa. Feature parity on the web with the Ubuntu desktop primary platform is however not required.

Currently Ubuntu One's functionality is mixed between the web and desktop platforms. Some functions are available only on the web, some functions are available only on the desktop. To complete some journeys a user currently needs to use both the web and desktop platforms in parallel!

Scope

This blueprint discusses the move of the pre-existing account and management functions from the web onto the desktop. The scope of this first phase is very strictly constrained to only include unifying the Ubuntu One desktop indicator functions with the additional features currently only offered by the web platform.
