Make GRUB more userfriendly

This proposal is to make GRUB more userfriendly and cleaner.
Now, every installed kernel has a line to boot the kernel, and a line to boot into recovery mode.
I think it would me cleaner if Ubuntu just had one line, and (if present) an different OS has an other line.
To boot a different kernel (use case?), an F-key can be pressed (F8?), and it should show a list of installed kernels. An other F-key can be used to boot into safe mode. Ofcourse these hotkeys should only work when an OS is selected that offers these functionality.
This way, GRUB won't be cluttered with old kernels, and the items will always be on the same place (use case: "to boot in windows, press down, enter" instead of "search for windows xp in the menu, it can jump places").
