Menu bar usability issues

The size of the menu bars at the top and bottom of the screen are acceptable when used by 20 year olds, but does not fit into the "ease of use" mantra of Ubuntu.
If you take into account older users who may find it difficult to not only view the bars but also click on the items.
The items in the top menu bars are also very close together, which requires high precision clicks. The icons/buttons should be well demarcated and spaced out, since by default there is ample room on the bars. If it becomes crowded, the icons can get closer.
By default the bar size should be increased, with option to reduce it.
