A file-type ubiquitously used, but strangely ignored on linux, is the ".url". On my box I right-click, script-->" and have an openwinurl script that I DL'd from online. How about having Gnome, KDE, XFCE, etc. all automatically register this as a file type that they automtically invoke, read, and run in the default browser? That way someone on a box without the script who gets handed a USB with a windows shortcut (to a site online) won't be stuck?
