Screen Scaling to fix overscan/underscan on HDTV's with uneven pixels.
Some HDTV's have uneven pixels on the edge of the TV's. Panasonic is probably the most common that I've noticed. This causes an overscan that cannot be fixed with the open source Intel driver. WIth Nvidia you can use their tool to compensate for it. As far as I can tell AMD isn't affected by this. The specific TV I have issues with is a 46" Panasonic Plasma TV with a native resolution of 1024x768. The Fill, Zoom, Just, settings do not fix this issue. I'm not sure if it's possible, but my idea is to implement a Intel tool to compensate the overscan, without having to use xrandr manually.

Matthew - what is the most recent version of Ubuntu which has this problem? Have you tried using a newer kernel from http://
The issue occurs in 3.6 RC1 still. Even using the xorg edgers "fresh" drivers. So I'm sure the issue hasn't been addressed.
