Automatically install a Touchpad config gui on laptops.
While touchpads are detected and configured during installation in gutsy, gui configuration tools like gsynaptics etc have to be installed by the user and xorg.conf has to be edited manually to add the SHMConfig = True option. In Hardy, an appropriate gui for the hardware could be installed automatically at installation and the SHMConfig = True option added to xorg.conf when - and only when - the hardware is detected. For Synaptics touchpads, gsynaptics, qsynaptics and ksynaptics are already in the repositories or a new gui could be developed as a front-end for a range of touchpad types. The user should be able to easily specify cursor speed, scroll options, touchpad sensitivity, button emulation (multi-tapping) and delay after typing.

And could a newer version of gsynaptics please be used? The current one in svn has acceleration, minimum speed, and maximum speed options, along with a bug fix (error to the console about a variable not existing, I think).
There already exists a "Touchpad" tab in the Gnome mouse settings dialog (probably only enabled when a touchpad is detected). Maybe your ideas could be integrated with that?
