Ubuntu and Universe should have all the packages needed to use the excellent pro audio that exists in Linux today, without all the hassle you usually have to go through to use it. CCRMA does this beautifully, but it's a derivative distribution and interferes with daily desktop use. A normal workstation should also be able to be a recording station, it just needs to be integratede properly.
