slightly enhance an existing firewall
Currently many using Ubuntu seem oblivious that one must secure a linux distro after an install else you may get picked.
A currently free, easily-used and set-up firewall, despite its simplicity, is available: Firestarter; how about having it set-up automatically, with permissions to run from the start, for users: there's one issue, though, it doesn't automatically detect and switch to the Network device currently in-use (in either Gnome or KDE); one must go into its settings and change that manually: which is very much not preferable, and this needs fixing.
Thus, how about dealing with these few things, and then installing Firewire as a default until a better, user-friendly, solution comes alone?

[aquina] UFW is installed on Xubuntu by default, but disabled. gUFW is not even istalled and supersedes Firestarter for a long time. UFW could be enabled, log events (normal) and reject incoming by default without (stateful). That would significantly increase security with minimum effort.
