Splash screen integration

Why bother with a splash screen at all, once a desktop system is ready for use show the login screen.
For a server a splash screen is irrelevant as nobody is looking.
If something fails during start up it then the failing component should show an appropriate message and make entry in the log.
Somebody mentioned a progress bar showing how the start process is progressing, but how do you know how many processes there are to start, what do you do with deamons.
